About CYP: Chawama Youth Project is a skills training and activities centre for the youth of the Chawama compound in Lusaka. The Chawama compound, while not the very poorest compound in Lusaka, certainly faces many challenges, including large scale unemployment, poverty, high rates of HIV/AIDS and extensive alcohol and drug abuse. Don't let that turn you off though, it's a bustling, buzzing, friendly place and working with CYP will give you an amazing opportunity to get to know the community and its people. The centre is run by a collection of locals who are passionate about bettering the lives of those around them and they achieve this goal daily. The centre has two main aims, to engage the youth of the area, keeping them active and 'out of trouble' and to encourage local economic development through skills training and promotion of self-employment. To this end, this rather inauspicious centre carries out a huge amount of work, including up to three classes per day in tailoring, computers, automotive mechanics, carpentry and entrepreneurial skills. The centre also houses a nursery school and works alongside Kumudzi Kwathu Culture (KKC), an after school youth theatre & dance group, so there's never a dull (or quiet!) moment! It is run entirely by the local community and funded by tuition fees and donations from various international organisations.
