CYP Skills Training Centre

About CYP: Chawama Youth Project is a skills training and activities centre for the youth of the Chawama compound in Lusaka. The Chawama compound, while not the very poorest compound in Lusaka, certainly faces many challenges, including large scale unemployment, poverty, high rates of HIV/AIDS and extensive alcohol and drug abuse. Don't let that turn you off though, it's a bustling, buzzing, friendly place and working with CYP will give you an amazing opportunity to get to know the community and its people. The centre is run by a collection of locals who are passionate about bettering the lives of those around them and they achieve this goal daily. The centre has two main aims, to engage the youth of the area, keeping them active and 'out of trouble' and to encourage local economic development through skills training and promotion of self-employment. To this end, this rather inauspicious centre carries out a huge amount of work, including up to three classes per day in tailoring, computers, automotive mechanics, carpentry and entrepreneurial skills. The centre also houses a nursery school and works alongside Kumudzi Kwathu Culture (KKC), an after school youth theatre & dance group, so there's never a dull (or quiet!) moment! It is run entirely by the local community and funded by tuition fees and donations from various international organisations.

Current projects: CYP's courses are on-going and year-round (except during school holidays)

Current Volunteer Opportunities: CYP are looking for volunteers to assist with their skills training courses and other activities at the centre, with opportunities available in:

  • Carpentry and Joinery
  • Automotive Mechanics
  • Tailoring and Designing
  • Information Communication Technology (basic skills including familiarity with basic functions, typing, Word & Excel, introduction to the internet etc).
  • Business & Entrepreneurial skills.
  • Assisting the teacher at the nursery school.
  • Admin: As usual, there are plenty of opportunities to assist with the less glamorous site of running an organisation e.g website, admin, marketing etc.
  • Fundraising, grant writing etc.
  • Social Work.
  • KKC carries out music and dance workshops for the youth of Chawama. They use dance as a tool to create awareness and to disseminate information on social issues in the community. Local youth can attend practice and rehearsals in the afternoon and can eventually join the dance troupe, potentially earning an income from commissioned public performances through the organisation.
Volunteer opportunities include working with the local dance teachers to pass on skills and create performances and working with the group with the recording and distribution of their performances.
  • Other Opportunities:
CYP works with the local youth sports club, CCDT and volunteers with skills in soccer/fitness coaching can also get involved with these activities. See separate profile page for more info.

Requirements: Apart from possessing experience in one or more of the areas listed above, CYP have a minimum the commitment of 1 month and a preferred commitment of 3 months to coincide with the teaching term.

Accommodation: Volunteers stay at Kalulu backpackers

Getting there: Kalulu is a 10 minute walk from the city centre bus station and local buses run all day to/from the Chawama compound. Though Chawama is approx. 7km from the city centre, the bus makes lots of stops, meaning you get 30 minutes each way to really experience the sights, sounds and smells of the city!! Justin from Chawama will take the bus with you the first few times to until you are well acquainted with the route!
